The Pros and Cons of Geothermal Heat Pumps in Mentor | Apple ...

If you live in the Mentor, OH area, you?re probably like a lot of people who are looking for ways, both large and small, to save money on heating your home. Geothermal heat pumps are a terrific way to take advantage of renewable energy. However, many of our customers in Mentor, OH?have been asking about the pros and cons of geothermal systems. We thought it would be beneficial if we put together a comparison of pros and cons about geothermal systems.

How Geothermal Systems Work

While geothermal systems are gaining popularity, there are some people who aren?t quite sure how they work. Here is a basic overview of geothermal systems.

  • Renewable energy ? If you were to dig down about 10 feet into the ground, the temperature there would be around 55? F. It stays this temperature all year long?no matter what the temperature of the air is above it.
  • Ground loop ? Using a series of coils buried in the ground, geothermal systems take advantage of that temperature consistency. In heating mode, a heat pump in your home circulates refrigerant through the coils in the ground to absorb heat. The heat is delivered to the heat pump and transferred to the air using a heat exchanger. In cooling mode, the process is reversed.

Geothermal Pros

  • Doesn?t burn fuel ? One of the main benefits to geothermal systems is that they don?t have to burn any fuel to heat your home. Instead, they just move heat from the ground into your home.
  • Uses free, unlimited, renewable energy ? By taking advantage of energy stored in the ground, geothermal systems use clean, free and renewable energy that will never run out.
  • No pollution ? By using clean energy, your geothermal system doesn?t create any pollution.
  • Durable ? Geothermal systems are known to be durable and have a long life.

Geothermal Cons

  • Reduced efficiency ? In extreme temperatures, in order to keep up with heating demand, geothermal heat pumps will actually consume more energy.
  • Initial cost ? While geothermal systems have the potential to save you money on heating and cooling your home, they typically cost more to install than other, more traditional systems.

If you?re interested in having a geothermal system installed at your Mentor, OH?home, contact the experts at Apple Heating. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff will be able to answer any questions you might have. We would love to schedule a time to come out to your home to see if geothermal is a good option for you.

Record price for Marvin Cone painting in Sotheby's auction ...

Artists gather at Stone City in 1932. Featured in photo (back row) are Marvin Cone (at easel) and Adrian Dornbush. Seated between them is Marjorie Nuhn. Credit: Grant Wood Art Gallery, Anamosa, IA.

?

Marvin Cone just took a giant step out from Grant Wood?s shadow.

Cone?s 1936 oil painting, ?Stone City Landscape,? has sold at auction for $752,500 ? a record for the Cedar Rapids native who has not enjoyed the worldwide fame of his lifelong friend, colleague and collaborator in the Stone City Art Colony of 1932 and ?33.

Sotheby?s New York sold the Cone work Nov. 29 during its American Art Auction, which tallied $27.6 million, exceeding expected sales of $24.2 million. The Cone piece, privately held for 25 years, far exceeded its expected selling range of $120,000 to $180,000. Multiple bidders drove up the price, but Sotheby?s officials said they cannot divulge the buyer?s identity.

?It?s wonderful,? Sean Ulmer, curator at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, said of the sale. ?Marvin Cone has been an undervalued and under-recognized artist in the broader scene in American art.

?It seems as if collectors are paying more attention to his work. This sale price is phenomenal. He?s had other strong sales in the past, but this piece is particularly stunning,? Ulmer said. ?It comes from an important period in his life ? the 1930s, when he was making some of his best landscapes, so the buyer chose well.?

Sotheby?s also sold Cone?s ?The Appointed Room? for $80, 500 on Sept. 28. Other recent sales range from $4,740 for ?In a Paris Park? and $34,160 for ?Cloud Patterns,? both in September, to $186,000 for his ?Farm Silhouette,? sold at Jackson?s in 2011.

Known as a Regionalist painter, Cone (1891-1965) explored various subjects during his prolific career. The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art holds more than 500 of his works, ranging from landscapes, clouds and circus scenes to architecture, doors and stairs.

Ulmer said the ?Stone City Landscape? is unusual, however.

Unlike his friend Wood, Cone didn?t do too many Stone City paintings, Ulmer said.

Related: American Master getting his due through massive exhibition

?The actual sketches by him done at the Art Colony are figural and very, very sketchy of that period. He was spending most of his time teaching, not making art,? Ulmer said.

Also, while Cone?s landscapes often reflected his home state, he changed certain aesthetic aspects, making them more generalized.

?This one is more secure in identification, because we have the Stone City cliffs that make it very specific,? Ulmer said. ?He was not interested in painting what a camera would shoot.?

Visitors to the museum and its online gallery ? crma.org/Gallery/Marvin-Cone.aspx ? will see similarities between Cone?s other landscapes and this ?singular, stellar piece,? Ulmer said.

And now the art community?s spotlight will rightfully shine on a man who preferred to live a quiet life, painting at home and abroad, and teaching for more than four decades at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Review: Marvin Cone exhibition is visual revelation

?More people will be paying attention to work of Marvin Cone because of this particular sale,? Ulmer said. ?More people will say, ?Who is this person? I should get to know this person?s work better.?

?The whole point of our exhibition is to increase his visibility, which is long overdue. This phenomenal sale will help in our cause to make him a much better-known artist,? Ulmer said.

?The quality was always there. He was fairly well known during his lifetime but people across the country have kind of forgotten how good an artist he was. Our exhibition and a sale like this will go a long way in resurrecting his reputation.?

Biophysicists unravel cellular 'traffic jams' in active transport

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) ? Inside many growing cells, an active transport system runs on nano-sized microtubule tracks that resemble a highway, complete with motors carrying cargo quickly from a central supply depot to growing tips or wherever materials are needed. In spite of the cell's busy, high-traffic environment, researchers know the system somehow works efficiently, without accidents or traffic jams.

Now a team of biophysicists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, using a special technique and unique microscope, have improved upon earlier studies that used too-simple models not able to account for the densely crowded, dynamic conditions in a real cell. The new work, led by biophysicist Jennifer Ross, greatly advances understanding of how active transport proceeds smoothly, particularly in long cells such as neurons where it is vital to their survival. Findings appear in the current early online edition of Proceedings of the National Academies of Science.

Ross says, "What others learned from the simpler models and experiments gave insight into how single motors work, how load affects velocity, and how single motors are stopped by static objects such as microtubule-associated proteins or intersections. But so many questions remained, such as what happens in a high-traffic with many other motors? How can single motors and cargos with many motors efficiently maneuver?"

With this work, she says, "We're getting closer to understanding the more complex, crowded environment of the cell and how large objects, like organelles, can be moved from the cell body in your spine out to your big toe along a neuron one meter long. Although previous studies thought that traffic would be a problem because it would cause motors to detach, we found it is not a problem for an organelle because there are so many motors. We found that the traffic would slow you down, but not enough to hurt any essential processes. It would take the organelle 12 days instead of six to travel a meter."

A key to Ross and colleagues' experimental system is a custom-built, single-molecule total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscope she built for her laboratory. It is much brighter than commercially available instruments and gives researchers the remarkable ability to see and photograph individual molecules in real time.

For this investigation exploring the effect of high traffic on active transport via microtubules, they also used quantum dots (Qdots), a nanocrystal of semiconductor material that fluoresces in different colors based on size, making them useful biological probes, Ross points out. "We use them as a stand-in, a model for common cellular cargo such as a mitochondrion, after we discovered that they bind to multiple cellular kinesin motors. If individual motors are like cars, Qdots are a bus," she adds.

The transportation analogy works remarkably well for understanding the molecular-level active transport system, says Ross. The multi-lane nano-scale microtubule system in a cell is like a multi-lane highway along which essential cargo is moved. An organelle needed at the growing tip floats around until it finds a microtubule. Kinesin motors with two "feet" that fit neatly into the tracks then latch onto it and "walk" along toward the goal in prescribed footprints.

But a basic problem for the motors is they cannot change lanes. If they come upon a slow-moving or stopped motor in the track, all traffic stops in that lane and cargo may be released. This led earlier observers to assert that stalled protein on the microtubules, a "traffic jam," poses a threat to active transport. Yet Ross says evidence doesn't support this view; somehow cells find a way to use active transport smoothly and successfully.

In the UMass Amherst experiments, she says, "We're trying to find out how cells do this, work without accidents or stalls. We set up experiments in which we kept adding motors to see what happens in a high traffic situation." An unusual quality of the Qdots, Ross adds, is that they attach to multiple motors and move along all lanes of traffic at once.

The researchers use three colors for labeling the Qdots, 10 percent of the motors and the microtubules, then take videos in real time to measure how far the single-track motor moves in a given time compared to how far the Qdot goes. They also measured how fast each component moved and how much time each spent on the microtubule.

"We were surprised at first because the Qdot could move eight or 10 microns along the track in these high-traffic situations when a single motor could almost not move at all. Then we realized the Qdot had multiple motors attached and further, it could take on or let go of motors while still holding onto the other parts of the track. They might have 10 motors bound with 20 feet on several tracks. So even if a single motor gets hung up, the cargo can still move," Ross explains.

"Interestingly, the Qdot and single-motor velocities were identical, so they didn't go any faster, they just stayed on longer and it enabled them to go farther. We have showed that having multiple motors is one way a cell can handle high traffic situations in active transport."

"We've shown that high traffic is not an issue. It slows things down but it does not stop transport. I think this is a big discovery. Others before us have said that traffic could bring it all to a halt, but it turns out that if you have multiple motors it would solve this problem."

Carbon pollution up to 2 million pounds a second

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The amount of heat-trapping pollution the world spewed rose again last year by 3 percent. So scientists say it's now unlikely that global warming can be limited to a couple of degrees, which is an international goal.

The overwhelming majority of the increase was from China, the world's biggest carbon dioxide polluter. Of the planet's top 10 polluters, the United States and Germany were the only countries that reduced their carbon dioxide emissions.

Last year, all the world's nations combined pumped nearly 38.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil, according to new international calculations on global emissions published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change. That's about a billion tons more than the previous year.

The total amounts to more than 2.4 million pounds (1.1 million kilograms) of carbon dioxide released into the air every second.

Because emissions of the key greenhouse gas have been rising steadily and most carbon stays in the air for a century, it is not just unlikely but "rather optimistic" to think that the world can limit future temperature increases to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), said the study's lead author, Glen Peters at the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research in Oslo, Norway.

Three years ago, nearly 200 nations set the 2-degree C temperature goal in a nonbinding agreement. Negotiators now at a conference under way in Doha, Qatar, are trying to find ways to reach that target.

The only way, Peters said, is to start reducing world emissions now and "throw everything we have at the problem."

Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist at the University of Victoria in Canada who was not part of the study, said: "We are losing control of our ability to get a handle on the global warming problem."

In 1997, most of the world agreed to an international treaty, known as the Kyoto Protocol, that required developed countries such as the United States to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 5 percent when compared with the baseline year of 1990. But countries that are still developing, including China and India, were not limited by how much carbon dioxide they expelled. The United States never ratified the treaty.

The latest pollution numbers, calculated by the Global Carbon Project, a joint venture of the Energy Department and the Norwegian Research Council, show that worldwide carbon dioxide levels are 54 percent higher than the 1990 baseline.

The 2011 figures for the biggest polluters:

1. China, up 10 percent to 10 billion tons.

2. United States, down 2 percent to 5.9 billion tons

3. India, up 7 percent to 2.5 billion tons.

4. Russia, up 3 percent to 1.8 billion tons.

5. Japan, up 0.4 percent to 1.3 billion tons.

6. Germany, down 4 percent to 0.8 billion tons.

7. Iran, up 2 percent to 0.7 billion tons.

8. South Korea, up 4 percent to 0.6 billion tons.

9. Canada, up 2 percent to 0.6 billion tons.

10. South Africa, up 2 percent to 0.6 billion tons.

Letterman, Hoffman, Zeppelin honored at White House

WASHINGTON (AP) ? David Letterman's "stupid human tricks" and Top 10 lists are being vaulted into the ranks of cultural acclaim as the late-night comedian receives this year's Kennedy Center Honors with rock band Led Zeppelin and three other artists.

Stars from New York, Hollywood and the music world joined President Barack Obama at the White House on Sunday night to salute the comedian, the band, and their fellow recipients: Actor Dustin Hoffman, Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy and ballerina Natalia Makarova.

The honors are the nation's highest award for those who influenced American culture through the arts. The recipients will be saluted by fellow performers in a show to be broadcast Dec. 26 on CBS.

Obama elicited laughs from his guests when he described the honorees as "some extraordinary people who have no business being on the same stage together."

Noting that Guy made his first guitar strings using the wire from a window screen, he quipped, "That worked until his parents started wondering how all the mosquitoes were getting in."

The president thanked the members of Led Zeppelin for behaving themselves at the White House given their history of "hotel rooms trashed and mayhem all around."

"It's fitting that we're doing this in a room with windows that are about three inches thick and Secret Service all around," he said to laughter from the diverse group of artists.

Obama went on to note Letterman's humble beginnings as an Indianapolis weatherman, who once reported the city was being pelted by hail 'the size of canned hams.'"

"It's one of the highlights of his career," he said.

All kidding aside, Obama described all of the honorees as artists who "inspired us to see things in a new way, to hear things differently, to discover something within us or to appreciate how much beauty there is in the world."

"It's that unique power that makes the arts so important," he added.

Later on the red carpet, Letterman said he was thrilled by the recognition.

"It supersedes everything, honestly," he said. "I haven't won that many awards."

Meryl Streep first introduced the honorees Saturday during a formal dinner at the U.S. State Department hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and attended by celebrities including comedians Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, and Letterman's longtime band leader, Paul Shaffer.

Clinton noted the ballerina Makarova "risked everything to have the freedom to dance the way she wanted to dance" when she defected from the Soviet Union in 1970.

Makarova quickly made her debut with the American Ballet Theatre and later was the first exiled artist to return to the Soviet Union before its fall to dance with the Kirov Ballet.

Clinton also took special note of Letterman, saying he must be wondering what he's doing in a crowd of talented artists and musicians.

"Dave and I have a history," she said. "I have been a guest on his show several times, and if you include references to my pant suits, I'm on at least once a week."

The crowd gave Clinton a standing ovation as she hosted her final salute to the nation's artists as secretary of state.

Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein gave her a subtle nudge to run for president in 2016, saying there's another room at the State Department to name after a secretary who later becomes president.

Beginning today, consumers can order a contract-free iPhone 5 at three price points ? $649 for a 16GB version, $749 for a 32GB version, and $849 for a 64GB version. (Freedom comes at a price, folks!)?

It's important to note that the unlocked iPhone 5 will not work on CDMA networks like the ones operated by Verizon and Sprint. It will work on GSM networks such as the ones operated by AT&T and T-Mobile. Since T-Mobile does not currently sell subsidized iPhone 5 handsets, the announcement from Apple kinda/sorta paves the way for a T-Mobile iPhone 5.?

So why would someone want an unlocked iPhone 5, anyway??Well, it gives you more options.

"If you don?t want a multiyear service contract, or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad," Apple wrote on its website, "the unlocked iPhone is the best choice. It does not come with a micro-SIM card for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, or a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5, so you?ll need to get one from any supported GSM carrier worldwide."?

In related news, the iPhone 5, which was hard to come by in the first few weeks after launch, is now readily available at most brick-and-mortar Apple stores, according to a new survey from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.?

"We believe the iPhone 5 has finally reached a point where consumers can walk into an Apple Store and walk out with a phone," Munster wrote in a note to investors obtained by Apple Insider.?

The iPhone 5 has received a warm reception among critics.?"On balance," one reviewer wrote,?"I still consider the?iPhone?the best smartphone on the market."

So do many consumers, apparently: Kantar Worldpanel recently reported that blockbuster sales of the iPhone 5 have helped Apple's iOS to put Google's Android in the rearview, and become the most popular mobile OS in the US.?

"I'm going to be me," says Brian Wilson | bettor.com

"I'm going to be?me," says Brian Wilson

These were the words by star relief pitcher Brian Wilson when the San Francisco Giants signalled with slight hope that he will be coming back in 2013 Major League Baseball season.

However, it seems a distant call now as the Giants recently did not tender his contract making him a free agent this offseason.

"I like our choices, including him being one, as we start the regular season," general manager Brian Sabean said earlier Friday.

"We've visited it internally, We are open to the idea. He certainly deserves that?consideration, It's really a snail's pace at this time, Not a ton expected. He's throwing 60 feet flat ground, We have fallback positions, We've created some options if one or both doesn't decide to sign with us," General manager Brian Sabean said.

He further said, "We may be prepared to go with the same group, We're open to that. He certainly deserves that consideration, I would think it would be later on."

Many say it was expected that Wilson will not get any potential extension with the Giants. He did not play well during the 2012 Major League Baseball season. He finished with 9.00 ERA along with one save, two strikeouts and 3.00 WHIP.

Overall he possesses career 3.21 ERA along with 171 saves, 340 strikeouts and 1.34 WHIP.

Last season, Wilson underwent Tommy John surgery which was the main reason he could not play the whole season.

Now free agent, Wilson, can make his moves choosing another franchise for his potential future. Many teams have also started looking ways to negotiate with Wilson?s agent.

On the other hand, few experts also mentioned a possibility that now since Wilson is a free agent; the Giants might talk to him for another season but with low priced deal. Before tendering contract, the three-time All Star was guaranteed $6.8 million.

Regarding re-signing, it all depends upon Giants general manager Brian Sabean. He likes him and always regarded him one of the best relief pitchers of recent times.

Next few weeks will be critical when Giants reliever will be deciding on his future relationship with another leading Major League team. ?

Property marketing with Pinterest - A how to guide - Dynamic Business

Using social media?sites like Pinterest?as a method of real estate marketing may still be considered a novel approach. However, when used in combination with traditional campaign methods, it can be a complimentary tactic to help drive a property sale. Here are some helpful hints to get you started.?

Think about aesthetics

Pinterest is now the photo sharing successor of sites like?Flickr and Picasa, but it offers more in terms of being visually expressive. It evokes the imagination of the user, either through brand, storytelling or vision ? and suggests a lifestyle rather than just being a picture gallery. When you look at how much real estate is based on visual presentation, it?s an ideal union when joining the tools of this 11 million user platform with the needs of real estate marketing. Here are some items you should include when creating and managing a Pinterest real estate page:

  • Good quality photography. Good lighting makes a room noticeably bigger, cleaner and newer
  • Be sure to emphasise how much storage the property has as this is a good selling point
  • Embed media clips ? such as virtual tours of the home ? as your pins. Pinterest can take Vimeo and Vevo formats as well as YouTube clips. Clips are also a great way to drive organic traffic back to your source
  • Split imagery ratio as 50% interior, 50% exterior
  • Go beyond the features of the house. Think of your boards as points of storytelling for your neighbourhood and everything you admire, such as wildlife, DIY, green energy, foods, local bars etc
  • Choose attractive board covers as these will feature the most prominently amongst pinboard images

Attributions: The Key to SEO

Many Pinterest users are missing out on opportunities to reference their brand and presence simply because they forget to properly reference and attribute their pins.

Never upload a pin without referring it back to a domain. If a Pinterest user decides to share (?re-pin?) your content, you will miss referral traffic back to your Pinterest page, or your original website. For example, a property listing should link back to the original real estate listing, blog or classified advertisement.

Using keywords will ensure that your pins will show up not only in the Pinterest search itself, but will increase your Google search rank. Because the Pinterest search option is still quite simple, people may be looking for items which are very specific, and will therefore choose to use quotations to increase their search results; hence why using strategic keywords is paramount. For example, if you are selling a one bedroom apartment in St Kilda you would take advantage of informative key terms and anything else which makes the listing more unique and appealing:

Use descriptive, informative keywords

#realestate

#StKilda

#apartmentforsale

#onebedroom

#HockingStuart

#selling

Use additional keywords

#beach

#Melbourne

#lifestyle

#summer

#modern

Pinterest is an ideal platform for e-commerce, which is why all users listing pins with a sale value should take advantage of the monetary value classification, which can be automatically added as a price ribbon across the image thumbnail. For example, you may wish to add the market value of your property to your pin.

Using an application like PicMarkr will ensure that your property images are accredited with a custom watermark, especially if you wanted to reference the real estate agent or the website of the property listing.

If you are hosting content on a referring site, such as a blog, make sure that you are able to add a Pinterest button so that visitors can pin from your original content source. A Pinterest application such as WooBox will also expand your online presence by allowing a tab of your pinboards to be visible on your fan page ? this is an advantage for social media fans that may only use Facebook.

Get adventurous with your wording

Pin descriptions allow up to 500 characters, which is incredibly generous from a search perspective. Many pinners do not take advantage of this character limit because they do not realise that they are allowed this amount in the first place. It?s an added advantage for a real estate listing because it allows descriptions to be comprehensive whilst creative at the same time. Go beyond describing the basics about the property and think in terms of selling a lifestyle.

Don?t do it alone

Despite its online success as a top referral traffic booster, Pinterest works best when used in unison with other marketing methods, such as other social media, online and print advertising. Enlisting the help of an agent will ensure that a property sale is still run through traditional and trusted avenues, and this will ensure potential buyers in the market ? who don?t use social media ? will still be in the running for a bid on your property.
