NASA to launch new mission to Mars to probe below the crust (+video)

NASA'S first mission deep below the surface of Mars aims to understand how the Red Planet formed and how that geological history compares with that of another rocky planet ? Earth.

In doing so, the project could shed additional light on how a planet that could have been hospitable to life early in its history became so hostile to it today, at least on the surface.

NASA officials announced the mission during a briefing late Monday afternoon. Known as InSight, the lander aims to use a seismometer to determine the size, makeup, and current condition of the planet's core, develop a profile of the planet's crust, analyze its mantle, measure the planet's marsquake activity, and measure the rate at which meteors are striking the planet's surface. In addition, the lander will sink a probe several meters into the soil to help estimate how the planet's temperature varies with depth.

As for habitability, on a planetary scale what goes on under the crust can be just as important as what goes on at the surface, astrobiologists note.

Global magnetic fields ? which Mars no longer has ? can deflect cosmic rays and charged particles from solar storms, which can threaten organisms on the surface. Earth's magnetic field results from the motions of an electrically conductive molten-iron outer core. On Mars, this dynamo has shut down.

On Earth, heat from the core also drives plate tectonics ? a planetary heat-exchanger in which the crust is constantly recycled between taffy-like material in the mantle and solid surface. Tectonics triggers volcanism, whose gases can play an enormous role in readjusting the composition of a planet's atmosphere ? including the amount of water vapor ? and hence its climate.

Does Mars have active tectonics today? "We just don't know," says John Grunsfeld, NASA's associate administrator for the agency's science-mission directorate.

This mission falls under the agency's Discovery program, which focuses on relatively low-cost missions whose hardware costs are capped at $425 million. Curiosity, by contrast, is part of the NASA's Mars Exploration Program. And the cost of its mission is estimated at $2.5 billion.

Despite it's relatively low cost, InSight aims to answer questions planetary scientists have been asking about the Red Planet for decades, Dr. Grunsfeld explained during the briefing.

"We're very confident that this will produce exciting science," Grunsfeld said.

Honest Mondays: Surround Sound - HOUSE*TWEAKING

...because home doesn't happen overnight.

It seems you all enjoy it when I open up and am honest about my thoughts on home decor, family and life in general. At least, that?s what I took away from this blunt post detailing my experience living without a bathroom door for three months. So, I?m declaring Mondays here on H*T ?Honest Mondays.? I?ll?share my unedited feelings on something related to house and home, interior design, family, life, kids, motherhood, wifehood?or maybe something completely unrelated to any of those topics. Ha! Just whatever strikes me at the moment. I may divulge one truth or ten. I?m going to be spontaneous. I think it will be a great way to start the blog week. My hope is that for the rest of the week you?ll feel more familiar with the girl behind the posts. I am a real person! I encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments section as well.

So, let?s cut to the chase. Today is Monday after all.

Truth: I could care less about surround sound systems. See that unsightly speaker in the wall behind the couch? I don?t like it. I may even hate it. And it gets worse.

There are two of them. They stare at me like two empty robot eyes. I had a welcoming entry all planned out in my mind for that wall. A console table. A nice mirror above it. Maybe a lamp. A vase. Fresh flowers. You know, something that says ?Hi, welcome to my lovely home.? {Of course, I?m talking after the front door is functional. Of course.}

But no. That wall most definitely doesn?t invite you into the house. It doesn?t make you want to see more. If anything it says ?Hey. C?mon in. Grab yerself a beer, sit on the couch with yer hand down yer pants and watch the game.? That?s what that wall with two large speakers says to me. Do you not hear it?

When HH first told me about the speakers, I didn?t ask a lot of questions. Obviously. All I got was something about speakers in the wall that would be painted to match the wall. I didn?t realize they would be nearly a foot tall and live right where my beloved ? if only imagined ? entry mirror was going to hang. Details. I didn?t pay attention to them.

After they were in, I was disappointed. To say the least. Even painted, they didn?t recede into the wall like I had pictured. They just looked like painted speakers. But I thought ?HH has worked so hard on this house. He needs his man stuff. If a few speakers in the wall make him happy, then so be it. I?ll figure something out.?

But then a few weeks later, more speakers starting popping up.

Whaaaaaaat?! It?s like there was a surround sound mating convention in our family room. Seriously? I would go to bed delirious from dealing with a crying newborn all day then wake to find more and more of these little orb-like speakers popping up like ugly pimples. I finally confronted HH.

Me: ?Those boob speakers are a joke, right? You can?t be serious. They?re ridiculous.?

HH: ?No. What? You don?t like them. They?re soooo cool.?

And that, my folks, is where HH and I clearly do not see eye to eye.

I see three pairs of boobs or cajones looking at me when I sit on the couch. HH sees gloriousness. Electronics in boob form. Every man?s dream.

Tell me those don?t look like boobs.

And those?! HH says those can?t resemble boobs because boobs aren?t placed vertically. If anything, they look like two-thirds of a traffic light then. Still. Not pretty.

At this point, I?m furious. How could HH have not told me about all these speakers before he installed them? We had surround sound in our last home but not to this extent. He was going overboard. He kept saying it was all about the audio experience. He even said that this would be a good learning experience for me since at some point I?ll be helping others design/decorate their homes and that there will be a man who wants surround sound in the family room. I told him in that case I?d strongly discourage it.

And even if the speakers were completely invisible, I don?t get them. When I watch a show or movie in surround sound, I?m constantly looking behind me thinking there?s someone there. Or I hear Mabrey crying when she isn?t. Trickery. That?s what surround sound is to me.

If I lived alone I probably wouldn?t even have a TV ? much less four pairs of surround sound speakers. But, if I lived alone then I would be?well?alone.

It took me a while to get over the robot eyes and boob speakers. It was rough. I couldn?t sit on the couch without glancing up at the damn speakers and cursing them for their similarity to woman parts, man parts and traffic lights. But I?ve finally accepted them. I would never have chosen this setup myself but it?s here now and I?ll just have to work around it.

HH felt a wee bit bad and compromised by recessing the boobs?speakers under the TV. That way this pair of speakers won?t be visible once we install the tongue and groove plank around the TV and up the wall to the ceiling {after we finalize mechanical plans for artwork to raise and lower over the TV}. Still, we?ll have to use a grate just below the TV or something of the sort to allow sound to carry into the room from the speakers. Because, you know, it?s all about the audio experience.

I have a Plan B for the wall speakers behind the couch. I think I?ll have HH install wall shelves along the wall and I?ll place accessories just so to disguise the speakers. It?s no console table + mirror = perfection but I may just get a vase of fresh flowers in there somewhere.

As for the two pairs of boobs on either side of the mantel? Well, I?m stuck with those. I?ll continue to give them the evil eye. A la McKayla Maroney style. Maybe they won?t be so noticeable once we hang the large canvas art piece in front of the TV? Maybe. I?m not holding my breath.

And what happened to HH? He?s still here. I?m not mad at him. We see things differently sometimes ? although not often. Four pairs of speakers got nothin? on us. Not that I?m counting. Okay. Maybe I am.

Most Americans Give Small Business the Thumbs Up : topic ...

As politicians vie for the title of who is the biggest friend to small business, the rest of America is just as enamored with the little guy, says a new poll.

Some 90 percent of adults have a good opinion of small business, says a survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International for the Public Affairs Council, a nonprofit group for public affairs officials. The telephone poll of 1,750 weighed attitudes toward business and government.?

A Sharp Contrast With Big Box Companies

The 88 percent who have a favorable opinion of small business is a sharp contrast to those 67 percent who have a similar view of major companies and the 41 percent who give the federal government a thumbs up.

More than half of those surveyed (53 percent) said they had a ?very favorable? view of small business, compared to just 16 percent who said the same of major companies.

Small business also ruled when it came to public perceptions of honesty and ethics. More than half of those surveyed (52 percent) said small business owners have high ethical standards, compared with just eight percent who say the same about CEOs of major companies.

Standing Out in Customer Service

The survey also reports a rise in consumers? preference for dealing with small local companies over large national or multinational ones. More than two-thirds (68 percent) of those surveyed said they?d rather deal with the local company ?that may charge somewhat higher prices.? Just 29 percent preferred the large company. The number favoring small business is up from 62 percent in 2011.

Other Findings

Nearly a quarter of Americans are sympathetic to the challenges a small business owner faces, with 22 percent saying they?re concerned that large companies could use unfair tactics to make it tough for small firms to compete. This was part of a larger question about the power and influence of big business, with Americans' top concern (35 percent listed this) being that large companies might have too much influence on elections and public policy. The small business challenge was third, after fears that major companies would outsource jobs overseas (26 percent).

Americans also finger small business as the key to the economic well-being of the middle class for the past 50 years ? and they expect it to continue in that role for the next 50. Says the report: ?Small business is seen as more important than government, big business and unions in keeping the middle class economically healthy.?

Just over half of Americans (51 percent) say small business should get the credit for supporting the middle class for the past five decades. That?s well ahead of labor unions (19 percent), major companies (17 percent) and the government (11 percent).

Looking at the next 50 years, Americans again think small business will play a title role, with 49 percent of Americans predicting small business will be the most important. Nineteen percent thought major companies would do the heavy lifting, 18 percent said the government, and just 11 percent named labor unions.

T.I. To Stir Up Trouble On Wednesday's 'RapFix Live'!

It's time to roll out the royal carpet, because the King is set to make his debut on "RapFix Live." On Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, T.I. will sit down with Sway Calloway and chop it up about his upcoming album, Trouble Man.

Tip has a grind like no other. Since being released from prison last fall, the Atlanta rapper landed a VH1 reality series with his wife, Tiny, added some new muscle to his Grand Hustle record label, and immediately began recording for his eighth solo album. The street-bred MC, who popularized the term Trap Music, has long promised a return to the T.I. of old.

"We got a lot of hot, old-school, vintage T.I. records on there," he told MTV News during a January interview. "I'm talking like gutter, gangsta, intellectual ignorance, hard-core stadium sh--, but at the same time, we got those over-the-top crossover records as well, big features and whatnot we plan on putting into play."

The fiery lyricist isn't only concerned with his own music: Earlier this month, protégé B.o.B released his sophomore LP, Strange Clouds, and T.I. has spent a ton of time working with his newest signee Iggy Azalea. There will be no shortage of topics to address when Tip hits the red couch.

In addition to the King, "RapFix" will also be welcoming Mississippi rap rookie Tito Lopez to the show. Lopez who has drawn praise from Dr. Dre and was recently signed to Capitol Records has been building a healthy buzz lately. His latest single, "Mama Proud," features both a positive message and new-age lyricism over a soulful beat. You're not going to want to miss this!

Argentine unions plot British cargo ship delays (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? Argentine maritime workers are intensifying a boycott of container ships carrying British goods. They hope to pressure Britain to negotiate with Argentina over the disputed Falkland Islands.

Britain says it won't discuss the sovereignty of the South Atlantic archipelago as long as the islanders want to remain British.

Argentine maritime union leader Enrique Omar Suarez was meeting with other union leaders Wednesday to plan their next moves.

Transport delays could hurt Argentina more than Britain: Argentina exported $805 million in goods to Britain last year while the British sent $655 million in goods to Argentina.

Famous French card game: ?Asshole? - American Family In France

We have a French friend who?s a maniac for board and card games.? He?s fun to hang out with because we learn all kinds of things about the French; not just the games they play but game language, customs, and general French attitudes about winning, losing, and -er- cheating.? They don?t really consider it cheating, so much as being creative and smarter than the other players.

One game we liked a lot was called something that sounded like Trop d?Uc which pronounced sounds like:? Troh-dook.? I?m not sure I have the French spelling correct.

Anyway, you have several people playing (4-6 players) and each is dealt cards from a regular deck until all the cards are gone.? The person who is dealt the Queen of Hearts starts the game.? He is encouraged to rub his superior status and position in the noses of the less fortunate.

He puts down any card he wants (2 is the strongest and 3 is the weakest, so the order of cards from weakest to strongest is 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,J,Q,K,A,2).? [This outrageous ordering of cards is typical French stuff - they always like to do shit their own way, even if it flies in the face of reason and sense.]

The next player puts down either the same card or one that has a higher number.? So, for example, if the first player puts down a 4, the next player must put down a 4 or higher (5,6,7?).

If one player puts down a card, and the next player puts down the same number card, the third player is skipped and the 4th player is up next.? So anytime a number is played two times in a row, the next player skips his turn.? [If you are mad at your spouse, and wish to make his or her life miserable, make sure he or she sits directly to your left, as this game is played clockwise.? I also highly recommend staggering nationalities - American, French, American, French - around the table. That way you can work teamwork and retribution into your play, yet act like you don't care about world domination.]

If the person who starts the round puts down a pair (like a pair of 4s), all the players following also have to put down pairs.? You can also do this with 3-of-a-kind or 4-of-a-kind.? So if player #1 puts down a pair of 5s, the next player must put down a pair of 5s or higher (6,7,8,?) and the next must put down a pair, etc.

If a person doesn?t have a card they can play, or if they don?t want to play that round for strategic purposes, they call ?pass? and their turn is skipped; then they cannot play again until a new round is started. [They are encouraged however to harass and mock the players still in the round.? They are also in charge of refilling drinks and making sure everyone is well on their way to getting drunk.]

New rounds are started when no one can lay a higher card down anymore (either because they passed, or because there are no higher cards ? meaning there is a 2 on the table; or maybe because they?ve stormed off in a huff because they?re tired of being the loser all the time.)

The person who was the last one to lay down a card in a finished round starts the next round.? This continues until all the cards are gone from everyone?s hand, or until just one person is left with cards.

Whoever rids themselves of their cards first, is the President.? Second person to get rid of their cards is the Vice President.? The second to last person to get rid of his cards is the Vice Trop d?Uc and the last person to get rid of his cards is the Trop d?Uc.? Anyone else in between the Vice President and the Vice Trop d?Uc are just citizens. (sometimes they?re called ?neutrals?)? Just so you know, the word ?trop d?uc? translates into ?asshole?.

So, to be clear, if you?re the last one to get rid of? your cards, you?re the Asshole.

So now, you shuffle and deal the cards over again. [Did you know all the French we have played cards with suck at shuffling?? Yes.? It's true.? And they are overly impressed with the American bridge type shuffle, where you shuffle one way and then bridge the cards to force them back down in a reverse shuffle.? Wow your French friends with this smooth move but know that you risk making them feel inferior to Americans.? They take this shit seriously.? If you are worried about maintaining the friendship, flub a few shuffles making sure cards go flying everywhere so they feel better.]

Before the new game begins, the Trop d?Uc is forced to give his two best cards to the President (best cards are 2s, Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, etc. ? the higher the better).? And the President gives any 2 cards he wants to the Trop d?Uc (crappy ones).? Vice President gives any card he wants to the Vice Trop d?Uc and the Vice Trop d?Uc has to give the Vice President his best card (just one).

Now the Trop d?Uc starts the game as described above, going clockwise from there.? You continue the play, and again, once the cards are all out with only one person with cards, you reassign roles if they turned out differently.? So if the former VP finished first, he is now the President.? If the President finished last, he becomes the asshole.? [Lots of cheering and jeering should occur at this point.? Pointing across the table and yelling, "ASSHOLE!" is only appropriate if you have drunkeness as an excuse.? See next point.]

Try it!? You?ll like it.? I suggest copious amounts of alcohol be involved?
