Liverpool's new 'Football Quarter' sets homes and jobs goal
Ambitious plans to create a new 'Football Quarter' in North Liverpool have been unveiled by fans of the city's two Premier League clubs.
The new 'All Together Now' group says the regeneration scheme, which will concentrate on one of the most deprived areas of the UK, will celebrate the history of both clubs and bring educational benefits and job opportunities to communities surrounding the clubs.
Proposals include new homes near both grounds and joint facilities for the clubs including a centre of excellence educational facility, a football museum and an event and fan zone.
?
All Together Now has been formed by members of The Spirit of Shankly and Keeping Everton In Our City (KEIOC) groups.
?
The concept is designed to confirm the city?s global sporting image as a destination and encourage the redevelopment of the immediate area in line with the North Liverpool Strategic Regeneration Framework (SRF).
?
It aims to attract educational, community, recreational, leisure and retail facilities to an area which has modern stadia at Anfield and Goodison as its hub, all serviced by a sustainable transport infrastructure.
?
The new prospectus is aimed at attracting developers to more than 40 acres of land that has the potential to not only provide a better environment in which the football clubs can flourish, but to make a significant contribution to the sustainable regeneration of the area.
Among the scheme's supporters are Liverpool MPs Steve Rotherham and Joe Benton.
?
In a joint statement, they said: ?The areas around Anfield and Goodison Park are recognised as among the most deprived in the UK, whilst at the same time, the communities there are characterised by their unique spirit, tenacity, warmth and entrepreneurial potential.
"We have a collective duty to ensure that the areas in the vicinity of both Anfield and Goodison Park capitalise on the regeneration potential and reflect the world-renowned status of both clubs.?
?
Colin Fitzpatrick of KEIOC said: ?I believe football clubs should be an asset of their communities ? Everton is known as ?The People?s Club?, and injects more than ?10 million into the local economy throughout the season.
"They carry out incredible work through the award-winning Everton in the Community programme. The Football Quarter is designed to complement and build on these achievements for the benefit of fans, their communities, and course the club?s prosperity.?
?
Dr Paul Gardner of Spirit of Shankly added: ? As All Together Now, both KEIOC and SoS want to work with the clubs, the city council, the community and the private sector in delivering the Football Quarter. We are urging people to support us and help achieve our vision of an area in and around beautiful and historical Victorian parkland, anchored by two great clubs with magnificent 21st century football stadia, reflecting their unique histories and presence in world football.?
